Hi all. One of my friends horses may have salmonella poisoning. He is in the care of an excellent veterinary hospital but I was wondering if anyone has ever dealt with this before or has knowledge about salmonella in horses. Information about treatments, aftercare and how to prevent its occurence/reoccurence would be appreciated.

There was an article in Practical Horseman about salmonella and some other infections horses can get. I'm trying to search on their web site to find it, but not having any luck. I tend to recycle magazines, but maybe someone knows the article I'm talking about and still has it? _________________ Site owner/ admin, Wild Rose Horses

Thanks for the article Jenn. You mentioning the Practical Horseman article reminded me I should look back through my old Equus magazines.

Well I guess they have ruled out salmonella. They are now looking at other infections or the possibility of tumours in his stomach. He still has a fever but I guess is eating and drinking.

Well sad news to report. Rabbit was put down today. They were unable to control the diarrhea or fever and he finally went off his feed. They still aren't sure what the problem was but are doing an autopsy. I'm so sad for Jenn. A few us who are close friends are going to kick in to try and help out a bit with the vet bill. Other than telling her we're sorry that is about all we can do.

Oh that's terrible. Did they ever find out exactly what was wrong with him? _________________ Site owner/ admin, Wild Rose Horses

They still are not sure. The possibility of Potomac Horse Fever was one thought. She has opted to have an autopsy done. Hopefully it will find something conclusive.
